Way back in 1888, Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, who was an enthusiast in expanding learning in this region, built this college in the bustling central hub of the town of Coochbehar. The first Principal of this College was J.D. Goodley and the first Indian who graced the chair of the Principal was erudite Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal. For eighteen long years (1896-1913) he was at the helm of the affairs of this College. An ardent lover of books, this scholarly Principal was also a perfect academician and administrator.


3. Ananda Chandra College



Ananda Chandra College was established in 1942 during the turbulent years of Quit India Movement. Over the decades since then it has remained in the forefront of all the colleges of North Bengal in size, quality and performance. This college is now a pioneering seat of higher learning in the entire region of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal. The alumni of the college are now engaged in different academic, administrative and other important positions of the society. Many of them are now contributing to nation building in their respective capacities. It is a Government Sponsored College affiliated to the University of North Bengal, managed by a Governing Body under the direct control of Director of Public Instructions, West Bengal. 4. Asutosh College


The renowned mathematician Sir. Asutosh Mukherjee with a deep dream did establish this college. Asutosh College is affiliated under University of Calcutta. The college has a rich heritage that contributes to its own culture. The College was built up in the year 1916 under the leadership of Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, the famous mathematician, educationist and the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. 5. Bangabasi College

An educational institution of national importance, Bangabasi College had its genesis in the prophetic vision and spirit of sacrificial dedication of Late Acharya Girish Chandra Bose. Founded under private management in 1887, it had as its guiding inspiration the genius of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The aim of the institution was two fold: first, to cater to the growing demand for higher education and second, to nurture the spirit of nationalism in the minds of young learners under colonial yoke. At the same time, it marked an indirect protest challenging the narrow educational policy of the Hunter Commission.


6. Behala College


Behala College was established as a grants-in-aid State Government sponsored college in the year 1963 affiliated to Calcutta University under the Refugee Rehabilitation Scheme of the Government of India. It was recognized under section 2f by UGC in 1982. The College came under the pay packet scheme of the Government of West Bengal in the late seventies. Behala College celebrated its Golden Jubilee during 2013-14 with much zeal and fervour.The college has been re-accredited with grade 'A' in the second cycle of assessment by NAAC.



7. Krishnath College

Situated on the eastern bank of the river Bhagirathi, the 150 yrs old Krishnath college which has gathered to itself a halo bequeathed by its eminent teachers and alumuni, was originally founded by the Govt. of Bengal under East India Company on the 18th Nov. 1853 by notification no : 1913 20th Oct 1853, with the assistance of Nawab, Zaminders and a number of common people of this district although the idea of founding both the college and the University was first conceived by the visionary idealist and a Renaissance man Raja Krishnath - a dream that was not translated into reality by his cruel untimely death. However, since then the growth and development of this college have always been intimately concerned with Cossimbazar Raj family. Thus it is significant that the genesis of this Institution marked a cultural synthesis between feudalism and democracy not often dreamed of in that remote past.


8. Lady Brabourne College


Lady Brabourne College, with its lush green lawns and gardens opposite the Park Circus Maidan is one of the premier Institutions for women's education in India. Established by the Government of Bengal in July 1939 and named after the wife of Lord Brabourne, the Governor of Bengal till February 1939, the college made a humble beginning with 35 Muslim students and 9 faculty members in a rented house in Park Circus. The foundation stone of the building in which it is presently housed was laid on 26th August 1939 by Sir J. Woodhead the then Governor of Bengal. Ever since the college has expanded structurally and academically earning the reputation of having an excellent academic environment and has celebrated it’s Diamond Jubilee on the 26th August, 1999.


9. Loreto College


Founded in 1912, Loreto College is a women’s college affiliated to Calcutta University. It was the first college in West Bengal to be assessed by NAAC. It was awarded the highest rating of five stars in 2000. The College was Re-accredited by NAAC in December 2006 and was awarded an A grade. The College had the 3rd Cycle of Re-accreditation by NAAC in September 2012 and was awarded an A grade. The B.Ed. Department, founded in 1913, is recognized by the N.C.T.E. and was awarded the B++ grade by NAAC in 2003. The Department was re-accredited in 2009 and was awarded an A grade. The UGC has recognised Loreto College as a College with Potential for Excellence in 2006 and again in 2011. Currently, there are approximately 800 students in the College..


10. St. Xavier's Colleges


A Christian Minority Higher Educational Institution, St. Xavier's was founded in 1860 by a Catholic Minority Religious body, the Society of Jesus, and was affiliated to Calcutta University in 1862.
